Joy is a dedicated advocate for holistic, personalized, and child-centered learning. With four decades of experience in education and school leadership, she empowers leaders, educators, parents, and students to create meaningful, purposeful, and relevant learning experiences that honor the whole child. Joy is known for her passionate commitment to children, families, and educators, and she brings expertise in child development, education, and parenting to every conversation.
Joy earned her B.A. in Education from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and her M.A. in Educational Leadership from UNC Charlotte. She was the visionary Founder and Executive Director of the Community School of Davidson, a North Carolina public charter school consistently ranked in the top 10% of all North Carolina public schools. For over 20 years she led the school with an unwavering focus on creating a personalized, individualized, inclusive and holistic educational experience for all students using the Basic School foundational tenets of: Community, Curriculum, Climate, and Character.
Joy’s journey in education has been shaped by mentorship from Ernest Boyer, PhD and Mary Ellen Bafumo, PhD. Dr. Boyer, former US Commissioner of Education, and Dr. Bafumo led a project at the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching to guide educators on proven strategies in schools, known as the Basic School project. Joy worked on developing curriculum for the Basic School project and subsequently served as a national consultant for The Basic School Network under Dr. Bafumo’s leadership. Joy’s professional path includes classroom teaching, community partnerships, curriculum specialist, school leadership, educational consulting, and adjunct professorship at UNC Charlotte. Her consulting expertise includes keynote speaker, Board training, leadership development, professional development, and individual coaching.
Today, Joy continues to inspire and support educators and families through her consulting work, helping them reimagine what education can be when it centers the humanity and potential of every learner.
When she’s not working with clients, Joy can be found enjoying the company of her beautiful community of family and friends—including her husband of 35 years, Rogers, and their adult children, Eli and Zoë. Whether she’s reading, journaling, knitting, learning ukulele on her porch or exploring the outdoors through hiking and gardening, Joy remains in awe of the beauty of the natural world and the lifelong journey of learning.
